The Other Side of the Bayou
by Connie Stewart
Trapped in a world of mental illness, addiction, disgrace and the paranormal, I was subjected to violent abuse of all kinds. I desperately wanted to escape my tyrant father and wretched home life. I found reprieve through my psychic gifts and “jumping out” to the stars. As my supernatural abilities strengthened, so did Daddy’s hatred.
Mama knew more about Daddy’s late night visits than she lets on but she turned her head the other way. Her priorities were my siblings. My oldest sibling and hero, Ricky, was tortured until he had to run away. Then, Freddie, born with cerebral palsy and lucky enough to be institutionalized, escaped life in our God-forsaken family. After me came Catherine; sickly and scared of her own shadow, she manages to hide in the closet during Daddy’s most horrendous attacks. Luke, the youngest, is most tuned into my psychic gifts and quite magical. Mama was in her own psychotic world and repeatedly fed me to the wolf.
Savagely beaten to by my father at age of sixteen, I was evicted from the home. Clothes thrown out on the lawn, I had to find a place to live and a way to support myself. The excruciating journey back to myself begins there and has many horrific twist and turns.
Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, I called upon my healing gifts to guide me through an overwhelming medical maze. This profound journey made my coming home all the more sweet.
